This turtle is diurnal, normally inhabiting tropical dry forests and bush forests in South American countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, the Guianas, etc., in countries of Central America, such as Panama and some Caribbean islands. .

It occupies a series of habitats within this wide range. It lives in all types of jungle habitat and also inhabits the savannah, including grasslands resulting from ranching, felling and agricultural burning. The red-legged turtle is herbivorous and scavenger; consumes flowers (especially red and yellow), leaves, fallen fruit, wild mushrooms, invertebrates, live and lizards, birds or fish, fresh or decomposed. In captivity it feeds on a great variety of fruits. They should be fed a mixture of calcium leaves, fruits, vegetables and flowers and a small amount of animal protein.
